Leather Restoration

Leather Restoration revives the look and feel of the leather that has aged ungracefully, picking up scratches, dirt, stains and colour transfer from clothing. This is especially useful for an older bag, purse, wallet, or belt. The benefits of leather restoration are plentiful, one of the most important being that you are able to prolong the use of a favourite piece, and not have to replace it.

Bear in mind that what you see below is just an overview of the services, and if you have more questions, pop into our Spa at The Paramount, Melbourne for a visit. A quick chat with one of our friendly staff will answer any of your questions.

Before any services commence, a consultation session is always set up to help identify the appropriate services required – each case is individual, and we take pride in providing a unique service to each client.

The team at MyBagSpa Melbourne, renowned for their precise colour-matching and leather-dyeing processes, insists on using only the best water-based dyes and leather finishing, retaining the natural texture of leathers.

Why do we love what we do?

By removing germs, mould and bacteria, from items such as your favourite handbag which are carried so close to our bodies, we endeavour to promote a clean and healthy lifestyle (oh, so important in today’s world filled with pollution and busy routines). MyBagSpa also aims at educating the world in this regard, by extending its knowledge on preventive measures that are easily implemented and maintained. And one more thing - cleaning and restoring also ensure that bags and accessories are revived to brand-new conditions. After all, “Staying Clean Is Beautiful!”

Read on to learn more about the various processes…

Cleaning, Repair, Dyeing and Shine Restore are the various processes carried out at MyBagSpa, most of the time in combination, complementary to each of the others, to revive bags that have seen better days.

The first stage of the cleaning process is stain removal. When the leather is dirt-free, excess moisture is removed using our custom-made dryer. At this stage, metal polishing is also carried out, if your bag has detailed hardware such as studs, rings, and metal zips. When the cleaning has been completed, sanitising in a custom-made apparatus disinfects the leather, which is ready for dyeing. Cleaning removes not only dirt marks and stains, but it also eliminates bacteria that contribute to the breakdown of most materials. As the word clearly suggests, cleaning maintains a dirt-free surface, but more significantly, it allows you to extend the life of the leather.

Leather Dyeing is the process used to either change, or restore, the original colour of the textile. Whether you are looking to transform the exterior appearance, or reviving faded colours, this is the process that will enhance the overall façade. MyBagSpa also practises Precise Colour Matching. Prepared leather dyes that match the original or intended colour of the leather is sprayed precisely onto damaged areas. A quality check is carried out each time dyeing occurs, and a touch-up is applied if necessary, to ensure an even colouring.

Re-conditioning is a treatment used to improve the condition of leather. An appropriate leather finishing base is applied to preserve the qualities of leather that have faded with time. Perhaps you have noticed that leather ‘ages’, and in some cases, instead of softening, they have hardened, instead. This process lends to suppleness and restored lustre in both older and newer leathers, by restructuring the inherent leather fibres. A “soft-feel coat” that has been developed by MyBagSpa is essential for all leathers, but especially so for delicate leathers such as lamb, deer and calfskin. This finishing will present softness and suppleness to such leathers.

A final Leather finishing also imparts a renewed shine and gloss of the original leather, while sealing the colour to protect it from fading.

Last but not least, the final step is the application of Water and Stain Protection, followed by an in-house formulated Silk Treatment on leathers. These works together to create the final aspects of luxurious delicate leather, which is also resistant to water and stains.

You might ask then, when it would be appropriate to get into the action. We say, it’s never too late, but also that you should try to maintain regular cleaning processes to ensure that each time cleaning and/or restoration is carried out, you only have to do minimal work. Over time, most accessories and bags made of leather will have picked up scratches and/or scuffing in heavy-wear areas, such as handles and corners. In addition, most leather is dyed and treated before manufactured into bags. With use, the dye fades, and the leather loses its sheen. In fact, non-leather bags also suffer from wear and tear, most commonly encountering dirt and colour-fading.

Just as a guide, the common problems that would cause the need for leather dyeing include:

  • Denim or garment colour-transfer
  • Water and oil stain
  • Wear and tear
  • Colour fading
  • General everyday soiling
  • Built-up grime
  • Oxidation and patina
  • Pen ink
  • Mould

On most leathers such as lambskin, deerskin, ostrich leather, calfskin, crocodile leather, vachetta untreated leather, these problems are particularly inherent!

These problems are all easily fixed at MyBagSpa Melbourne. More importantly, don’t forget that we will also show you how to keep your bags protected against water, stains and dirt for the days forthcoming!
